VOCES8 Foundation Advisory Board
Sarah Holford
Sarah Holford has spent more than five decades at the forefront of two worlds: the rigorous discipline of maritime and commercial law, and the imaginative, collaborative sphere of opera. A barrister of the Bar of England and Wales since 1971, she built a distinguished legal career specialising in marine insurance, transport of goods, electronic trading documents and complex commercial disputes, later serving as an arbitrator for Lloyd’s Tier 1 cases. Alongside this, she developed a parallel vocation as an arts leader, festival founder and advocate for young artists.
In 1997 Sarah founded Les Azuriales Opera, an ambitious festival centred on the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild on Cap Ferrat. Over more than twenty years she shaped the organisation into a vibrant cultural presence on the Côte d’Azur, producing new and imported opera productions, commissioning work, and transforming historic spaces into performance venues. Under her direction the festival became known not only for its artistic quality but also for its commitment to emerging talent. The Azuriales Young Artists Programme, established in 2003, continues to support singers internationally, drawing on Sarah’s extensive network of coaches, directors and industry professionals.
Her leadership extended to the creation and stewardship of the festival’s charitable structures in both the UK and France, including the Les Azuriales Opera Trust, which she continues to chair. Her work in governance, fundraising, legal oversight and strategic development has made her a valued trustee for several arts organisations. She served for nearly a decade on the board of the Voces8 Foundation, contributing to its growth as a global leader in vocal music education, and currently sits on the advisory boards of Diva Opera and the Voces8 Foundation. She was also Chair of Trustees of SWAP’ra, supporting gender equality in opera, and a trustee of the contemporary music organisations Octandre Ensemble and Second Movement.
Sarah’s dual background gives her a rare perspective: the analytical precision of a senior lawyer combined with the creative pragmatism of a producer. Her experience spans general management, production logistics, commissioning, casting, marketing, event design and the complex legal frameworks that underpin arts organisations. She is widely recognised for her ability to mentor young singers, navigate international regulatory challenges, and build supportive artistic communities.
Fluent in French and with working knowledge of Italian, Sarah maintains an active presence in the operatic world across Europe, the USA, Russia, Korea and South Africa. Her career reflects a lifelong commitment to excellence, opportunity and the transformative power of music.
