Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the acclaimed Irish chamber choir New Dublin Voices, under the direction of Bernie Sherlock, presents ‘Snow Dance for the Dead’, a showcase of choral works by Seán Doherty. One of Ireland’s most compelling contemporary composers, Doherty explores themes of social conscience, political insight, and historical awareness through powerful text settings.
Doherty’s music ranges from the heart-wrenching devastation of ‘Snow Dance’ to the natural wonder of ‘Under-Song’ and the starry-night magic of ‘It’s Strange About Stars’. His ability to evoke emotions—whether through pop-inspired rhythms in ‘Time’, which brilliantly captures the way we perceive time at different speeds or the haunting beauty of ‘Little Girl Blue’—is extraordinary.
This recording also highlights Doherty’s deep connection with Irish poets such as W.B. Yeats, Paula Meehan, Brendan Kennelly, and the lesser-known Lola Ridge, whose words resonate in four of the album’s pieces.
